    Call to Action -- Housing Homeless Youth in Kansas City, Kansas

    1. What we know…
    •  As of May 2015, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) has served over 1400 homeless students through the McKinney-Vento Program.
    •  KCKPS has seen a 170 percent increase in homeless students between 2006 and 2014. Sixty-two percent of McKinney-Vento seniors are identified as "unaccompanied youth."
    •  Nationally, 75 percent of homeless or runway youth have dropped out or will drop out of school.
    •  Research shows that there is a high prevalence of depression, suicide initiations, rates of substance abuse and other mental/physical health disorders among youth who are homeless.
    •  Many youth who become homeless have histories of academic difficulties including suspension and expulsion.
    •  Homeless youth engage in risky behaviors and have high rates of prior arrests and convictions.
